Explore Bamberg on your own

The Bamberg tips offer you strolls of various lengths and duration. Print your favoured Bamberg tip before planning your trip with the BambergBus. 

Just hop off the bus at the selected stops and start your walk with your plan in hand - frank and free; just like a true Bamberger.

• Duration: short - about 1,4 km (about 30 min.)

1. Exit at stop  (Cathedral Square). Follow the road uphill, across the Cathedral Square along the "Neue Residenz" building. Following you'll pass the "Domschule". It is located to your right - on your left you see the Bishops residency. 
    
2. Head on following the street. To your right sits the monastery on the "Michaelsberg" (Michael's Hill). The street is getting more narrow short before the crossing. 
   ^{Here you can find Bamberg's smalles pub, the "Torschuster".} 
    
3. Walk down the hill staying left and instantly right again. (Follow traffic sign with blue arrow) You'll see the beautiful "Aja-Villa" at your left. 
   ^{The owner named the villa after his wife, lady of the house Aja-Söldner.} 
    
4. Follow the street ("Stutte"). Right at the crossing at the end of the street you'll find the cake shop "Emmie".
   ^{A stop is absolutely worth it. Their cakes and pastry is wonderful!} 
    
5. Follow the street left-hand side (am "Knöcklein") uphill. Along the old Karmeliter Monastery.
   ^{The small monastery shop is located to your right. It is embedded into a 400-year old vault.} 
    
6. Now turn right ans head down hill the "Kaulberg". To your right you see the "Obere Pfarre" (Upper Parish). Walk across the square in front of the church, arounf the front part of the building. 
    
7. Now take the stairs down in the so-called "Eisgrube" (Ice Pit). Head on straight along the street to reach the "Judenstraße" (Jew Street) where you turn left. 
   ^{If you walk right there much to explore in the Judenstraße. "Spezialkeller", the "Villa Concordia", the observatory.} 
    
8. Now cross the street. You are on the "Pfahlplatz" (Pole Square) now. Head across the square and leave it left-hand side. You are now walking along the wall (at your left) of the former "Domimmunität" (area arounf the cathedral). 
    
9. Take the short ascent strait ahead. You are now beneath the Cathedral Hill. To your right you will see the Old Town Hall. If you turn left here, you will be back on the Cathedral Square where you got off the bus.

• Duration: short - about 1,4 km (about 20 min.)

1. Exit at stop  (Hainpark / Bootshaus). Follow the street into the "Hain Park". After about 150 meters, you arrive at the "Altes Bootshaus" (Old Boat House) right at the shores of River Regnitz. 
    
2. Now remain right. You are now passing the popular bathing spot at your left.
   ^{For a fee of a single Euro you can swim in the river.}  
    
3. Please stay left all the way alongt the river. You will soon cross a small wooden bridge. Looking right you can see the "Alte Walkspundmühle" which today is a neat villa. 
    
4. A few meters onwards you can see a pitoresque, old flootgate. It has been a part of the former "Ludwig-Main-Donau Canal". It still on duty nowadays. Keep following the river left-hand side. 
    
5. At the end of ther paved path please walk around the house on the corner and stay left. You now walk over the weirs of the new hydroelectric power plant in the Hotel Nepumuk. 
    
6. When you crossed the river, please stay right. The reastaurant "Klosterbräu" is now at your right. 
    
7. At the end of the short ascent, you turn right into the "Judenstraße".  
   ^{Here you find one of the most important bourgeois buildings of the baroque in southern Germany: the "Böttingerhaus".} 
    
8. Now cross the street at the end of the "Judenstraße". You are on the "Pfahlplatz" (Pole Square) now.
   ^{Look up the "Kaulberg". You can see the impressive gothic choir of the "Obere Pfarre" (Upper Parish).} 
    
9. Head across the square and leave it right-hand side. After about 100 Meters you see the Old Town Hall at the right of the end of the street.
   ^{You have arrived at your destination!}

• Finish: Stop  (Hainpark / Bootshaus)
• Duration: medium - about 3,0 km (about 45 min.)

Please note: This route is a round trip. You circumnavigate the small "Hain Insel", between the canal and River Regniz. The canal / river is always at your left.

1. Exit at stop  (Hainpark / Botanischer Garten) and follow the street in to the Hainpark. Pass the large bridge underneath and head on straight.  
    
2. Bamberg's Tennis Club is located at your right. At your left you see a large lawn with the showy Lion Pavillon - approach it. 
    
3. Behind the Lion Pavillon, just after a walk two minutes, you enter the Botanic Garden with its large central pond. Head on your walk around it - no matter if left or right round. 
    
4. At the small inflow of the pond please stay left. You now reach the canal. To your left you see the flood water weir. 
    
5. Walk on having the water reservoir is on your left. After about 600 meters you approach the island's tip "Bug". Here you can rent a peadlo and enjoy the wonderful environment. 
    
6. Continuing the round tour, you stay following the path all along the Regnitz downriver, it allways at your left. 
    
7. After about 900 meters you are back at the large bridge you passed earlier. Pass it underneath again and still stick to the river. After further 600 meters more you get to the parking lot of the "Bootshaus". Turn right and you will find the stopp   (Bootshaus / Hain-Park) after about 100 meters.
